Vrije Universiteit Brussel: Middeleeuws Metaal: onderzoek naar metalen materiële cultuur in de Vlaamse steden, 1000-1600 n.C.

Bij archeologische opgravingen in Vlaamse steden worden regelmatig metalen voorwerpen aangetroffen in koperlegeringen, edelmetalen, lood(legeringen) en ijzer. Het toegenomen gebruik van metaaldetectoren speelt daarin zeker een rol, maar ook de gunstige bewaringsomstandigheden en de sterke toename in rijkdom en diversiteit van materiële cultuur in deze periode. Niettemin blijven die vondsten onderbelicht.

Slechts enkele vondstcategorieën, zoals munten en pelgrimsinsignes, vormen het onderwerp van doorgedreven onderzoek, vaak vanuit verwante wetenschappen als numismatiek en kunstwetenschappen. Het potentieel van metaalensembles voor interpretatie op site-niveau (chronologie, sociale en economische context ...) en voor ruimer onderzoek gedreven door archeologische en historische vraagstellingen, wordt onvoldoende waargemaakt. Dit project wil het pad effenen voor de integratie van deze vondstcategorie in wetenschappelijk onderzoek en in archeologische publiekswerking.
